How does Google determine page speed?

Today we have a question from the United kingdom government. who wants to know, how does Google ascertains page speed? In Google Webmaster Tools, some pages are listed as very slow– eight plus seconds. But I have measured on older computer hardware and browsers. And they do not take anywhere near that long to load.

Why might Google evidence such high numbers? Well, the fact is we’re looking at expending toolbar data, and that’s using toolbar data only from people who have opted in. But that’s looking at real-world load periods from people. For instance, if you’re in the United State, we might say, how long does it take to laded this particular page? And so if we’re looking at that, and it takes a long time, sometimes it’s not certainly your site.

It could be network connectivity. But it’s a good thing to bear in mind. It’s coming from all these different customers, who can have dial-up rows. They can have sluggish bonds. And so a lot of periods, people say, oh, I’m just going to throw a 500 -kilobyte page out there, and they forget there are a lot of people with slower connections.

So that data is based primarily on toolbar data. And we’re looking at what it looks like for real consumers. And so if you’ve got a lot of users who are having a gradual experience, then that can affect the overall rating. One thing to be remembered, however, is that merely something like one out of 100 pursuing is site hurry such a factor that it would actually change the positions to a noticeable degree.

So that’s something on the order of one in 1,000 places have truly site hurry as a really big issue for them. It’s always good to see if you can move a little bit faster and try to return develops to users a little bit faster. It forms your website know-how more fluid. It sees your users happier. There are good studies that say the return on investment is definitely worth it. But at the same time, I wouldn’t stress too about it.

But I just wanted to give you a little bit of visibility about how we estimate when we think a particular site is slow in Google Webmaster Tools.
